History of Vans Shoes
Vans was born in the USA on March 16, 1966, at 704 E. Broadway in Anaheim, California. Paul Van Doren and three partners opened their first store, The Van Doren Rubber Company, which manufactured shoes on demand and sold them directly to the public. On the first morning, 12 customers bought the first Vans Style 44 shoe, now known as the Vans Authentic.
The company grew in the 1970s, introducing new materials like canvas and mukluks rubber under contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force.
By the early '70s, Californian skaters adopted Vans for their aesthetics and the grip of their soles. In 1976, the Style 96 was introduced—an upgraded version of the Vans Authentic with better cushioning. Designed with input from legendary skaters Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, it became the first Vans skate shoe to bear the name Vans Era.
This era also saw the birth of the "Off The Wall" logo alongside other iconic models such as the Vans Old Skool (Style 36), Slip-On (Style 98), and Sk8-Hi (Style 38). With padded collars and different color combinations, the Vans Era became the shoe of choice for a generation of skaters. In 1979, thanks to skateboarding and BMX, Vans Slip-Ons became extremely popular in Southern California. By the late 1970s, Vans had 70 stores in California and was expanding nationally and internationally.
In 1980, Paul Van Doren began stepping back from daily operations. During this time, Vans started creating shoes for various sports, including baseball, basketball, and skydiving, aiming to compete with major athletic shoe brands. Vans Slip-Ons gained international fame when Sean Penn wore them in the 1982 cult film *Fast Times at Ridgemont High* and more recently in the series *Squid Game*. In 1994, Vans began manufacturing shoes overseas, allowing for the development of new skate shoes and sneakers that reflect current urban fashion trends.
Vans: A Brand That Supports Street Culture with a Commitment to Sustainability
Vans extends far beyond shoes, skateboarding, and streetwear. Since 1995, the Vans Warped Tour has brought together young artists and their fans for concerts, providing a platform for underground music genres like rock, punk, metal, rap, and electro. Meanwhile, House of Vans venues offer artists, skaters, and creators a dedicated space to express their work.
On the sustainability front, Vans is committed to multiple environmental initiatives. By 2030, the brand aims for all its key materials (such as rubber, cotton, leather, and polyester used in its shoes) to come from renewable, responsible, or recyclable sources. Additionally, Vans plans to cut its CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030 while continuing to implement further environmental goals and initiatives.
