OBEY was founded on the art, design and ideals of Shepard Fairey. Shepard started with an absurd sticker he created in 1989 while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. Since Fairey distributes its creations with a campaign street art around the world.
OBEY Propaganda is rooted in the cons-culture "DIY" (Do it yourself) punk rock and skateboarding. He also took evidence from popular culture, commercial marketing and politics. Fairey infuses his ideology and iconography in self-empowerment. Sarcastically to the limit of neurosis, we spurs by the imperative "obey" to warn us of the propagandists of the world.
OBEY Giant was founded in 2001 as an extension of the range of Shepard. Aligned with his populist views, clothing became another canvas to spread his art and message to the people. The clothing line is heavily inspired by classic military architecture, the essential work wear, as well as the elements and cultural movements based on the art of Shepard. Through designers Mike and Erin Wignall Ternosky, Shepard works to create designs that represent his influences, ideals and philosophy.
Among one of his works Famous: portrait of Barack Obama in blue and red at the presidential campaign in the United States in 2008.
